NO you people, I do NOT want Xanax, Ambien, Viagra, Cialis, Hoodia, a "rolex replica" watch, a bouquet, a new mortgage, a round of Texas Hold-'Em, a screensaver, DVD cloning software, life insurance, pirate w4r3z in fake boxes, an eBay handbook, "nude celeb" photos, a merchant credit card account, shares of crap stock, a crap diploma, crap vitamins, or a profile on a dating site!

I'm up to 40 messages a day that the *$(&@# junk filter can't capture no matter how much I train it.

40? You're lucky. For a while I had 500 a day, and as it is I'm still up around 200 most days. Filters have helped, but it's easier for me to click through and delete than it is to train a filter that gives too many false positives.

Spam is a huge, huge problem.

You used your primary email as yor registrar contact, didn't you?

It used to be bad for me, but about the time gmail started up, I cancellad all old email accounts, started a new one that is only for primary use (friends, message boards, etc) and some new "junk" ones that are safe for public display. Now I only get a couple junk mails a day.

The one that gets hit the worst of all is the address I used to register my domain name.

Oh, aye. I get not only spam e-mail, but spam snailmail addressed to my business that lasted 5 minutes, but was listed on my domain name registration.

That's what happened for me...and now that I've had the same email for 10 years, there's no way I'd get rid of it.

I get junk emails about how to get rid of junk emails.

I like how, with the rise of bayesian filtering, spammers' attempts to circumvent keyword-based filters so often backfire. For example, an email about Ambien may well be legitimate, since I work for the company that makes it, but an email about 4mb1en is most certainly not.

Nah, the company's filtering of outside mail is quite sufficient to take care of those sorts of things, and if anyone emails me at home, it can't be *that* important. And since I'm not in sales or marketing, I really don't have to worry about outside emails that deal with our products. But it's just interesting to realize that if I were training a filter from scratch (rather than using Gmail's built-in filters), "Ambien" would probably not get an email flagged as spam, whereas "4mb1en" would.
