Maybe I'm better off not giving anyone the benefit of the doubt any more, and just sticking with my few close friends, keeping my resources to myself, and telling everyone who is unhappy or lonely or confused to just piss off because when I try to help and encourage them they take what I offer and then shit on me.

It's funny, my dad used to express the same kind of sentiment. In his daily life, he was basically generous and trusting, and people occasionally took advantage of that, and fucked him over.
