The location independence of the internet encouraged connections over distance
But a person only has so much attention to give
So these distant connections come at the expense of a person's immediate neighbors.
A level of further advancement is happening that makes our networked systems aware of location and distance
Is this working to reverse the trend started before?

This is an interesting question. The Internet definitely can make the world smaller and enable people disenfranchised in any number of ways to more easily create fellowship. In the best of all worlds, there can be a convergence of online and off.
