Regarding Alaska - I would coordinate with ferry routes. I guess there's no ferry to Whittier, but it is probably a 3-hour bike ride from Anchorage, and you'll enjoy it.
You won't enjoy Denali, it is a business owned by Aramark; but if you take the highway, you'll see lots of animals just on the road.
In Seward, I believe, it is better to take a boat to see glaciers, but in Whittier you may just use a kayak.
Actually there is a ferry to Whittier - I rode it in 2004. From there it's 60 miles to Anchorage, but I'd rather head south to Seward for a while, in order to kayak around a bit. Last time I only got to do that for a day, and I'd rather do it for a week or more. :)
Denali was pretty fun last time but in a return trip I think I would rather go out backpacking instead of relying on their bus system. If I can't do that, then .. yep, I agree, might as well skip it.
Suggestions for additional routes are very welcome! I know there must be dozens I haven't thought of...
