Today I learned from this book that if I stood in San Francisco and held hands with my mother, and she held hands with her mother, and so on towards the East coast, then by the time the chain arrived in New York, one of my ancestors would be holding hands with a "missing link", an individual that was also the ancestor of the modern chimpanzee.

That's pretty neat.

Yeah, "Hands Across America", I totally forgot about that... Did that ever work? I mean, did we ever get enough hands? Or did we just run out of people somewhere in Kansas?

I honestly don't know how it actually played out - it seems like a logistical nightmare. I think it's seen as kind of a mixed failure. Still, it's kind of a cool concept, and a sure-fire pop cultural reference for generations!
