I remember waking up at night to the sound of it falling, during an intense storm. Redwood trees send their roots out horizontally over quite a distance, and when the house was built they cut the foundation into some of them. The tree seemed fine for many years, but it wasn't stable enough in the wind any more...
The canopy of the trees across the street from the garage caught that one, stopping its fall... It could have easily fallen in the direction of the house instead of the garage, and crushed our entire family!
