Right; as foreigners, we looked at the people in KY and OH with curiosity because for them we were just weird people from god knows where, and for us they were idiots that never saw people that are not like them. And all those movies where a boy or a girl was not accepted to a social club, for being different - we were clueless about it until we visited OH (my wife lived there for 2 years), and were those strange different people. They, the locals, probably were clueless about how funny they looked to us.
Here in the Bay area, you go to a party and you talk to anybody you like to talk to. Not so over there. They just ignore you. And I bet they believe that they are some kind of better than the people that look different.
But we did learn a good lesson from them. Don't mix with the people you are not interested in. Just leave, like Elisabeth Harmon left the social club she was invited to.
