My old roommate knew the story behind all the sci-fi relating to stories of uranium nodule hunting on the sea floor during the mid-1950s. Apparently it was cover for nuclear submarine research -- toss enough extra information around and it'll confuse the Soviets about our actual undersea nuclear testing or espionage or... something. I'll have to ask him again.

I feel like I ruined Clarke for you now that I brought his misogyny to the foreground. Then again, sci-fi writers got paid by the word and he made almost as much as Asimov.

If I didn't have to sleep? Oh man, that... would... drive my wife insane. If she didn't need to sleep either, then we'd probably get a lot more done on our respective hobbies. However I would never want to know anything about politics again because I couldn't go to sleep and thereby process it.

Sleep takes up a lot of time. However it does more than give the cats a reason to poke our faces. When I wake up, even from a nap (and man, I love naps), I feel like there is a new text file in front of me. I can figure out what to do next because "last" finally happened. If I no longer needed sleep, I'd probably take up ganj so I could wipe my thoughts more often.
