I've discovered that the pattern I'm fascinated by is "Heriz Serapi". The internet tells me it's a fusion of Russian and Persian tribal traditional patterns, but I'm not certain. Different sites give different descriptions.
So far, none of the rugs I've seen on eBay, except the stuff in the > 7k range, come close to the quality of the weave I saw in the above rug, in the shop in Walnut Creek. Only a few had the same artistic flair and detail in the pattern.
It really pisses me off, that in the beginning of this year, my ex-housemate deprived me of at least enough money to buy this rug. He stuck me with over $3000 in debt, completely dropping his share of the rent for three months, and blowing off all the utility bills for two months while he had exclusive occupation of the house. I took pity on him and his situation, and all I got for it in return was a couple of tense insults to my face about how I was "screwing him over", and a bunch of indiscriminately broadcast anger. "The world is teaching me a lesson," he yelled on several occasions, to me or my visiting friends, "Don't rely on anyone. Every time I do, they fuck me."
Well, we all learned lessons this year, didn't we, Mr. Victim Complex.
Anyway... It'll be quite a while before I'm happy enough with my finances to consider buying something as frivolous as a rug.
