Maybe you and I suffer the same affliction - that Oblivion supposedly tries to address. RPG plots tend to be football shaped, and about halfway through the football you start to realize that it's not going to get any more interesting that it is now. But if you can completely disregard the main plot, and just go off exploring, and still find plenty of things to do that aren't even tangentially related to the plot, you can remain in the middle of the football perpetually. ... And then just put the game down and move on any old time.
Also yeah, the only good console RPGs are RPGs that originated on the console - and even those generally aren't "real" RPGs (Final Fantasy, etc.), more like RPGs-on-rails. The only console RPG I've played in the last decade was The Bard's Tale (and even then because the PC version wasn't in the store at the time)...
All this aside, the co-op Halo 3 we played was a lot of fun. So consoles have their merits: Split screen gets two people into the same room. Let me know when you wanna pick that up again.
