This girl has a huge web spun between the garden and the branches of the plum tree in our backyard. She hung patiently in the center of it while I set the camera up about 10 inches from her, and lined up the moon in the background.
Worry not! 'Orb weaving' spiders are very timid, and very reluctant to bite. If disturbed, their first response is to scramble up into the tree and abandon the web. Symptoms from a bite are usually "negligible or mild local pain, numbness and swelling. Occasionally nausea and dizziness can occur."
BTW, just yesterday I was reading IMDB and I figured out what your last livejournal name was all about - Nineveh is one of the capitals of ancient Assyria, which the bridgekeeper asks about in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Ah hah!!!!!!!

That's a great picture. We've got some amazing spiders in the few plants in our garden, including some like that. Much more noble than the roaches...
