I should note that my just-so-story above, about how termites might have evolved the ability to digest wood, is actually known to be wrong in some of the details. According to recent comparative analysis of genomes in other insects, termites are more closely related to roaches than they are to ants, and in roaches the ability to eat wood is passed on by the offspring eating the poop of their parents (which contains the bacterium).
